Harness vs Leash

For the first year of my dogs’ lives they had been walked on collars, and have had no problems. However, as my dogs became stronger and more excited to go for walks, they began to pull on the leash just a bit, and end up choking themselves. This may have happened to you, and I am here to tell you why you need a harness instead of a collar!

- Harnesses prevent damage to the trachea of your dog. Collapsed Trachea’s are very common in small dog breeds – this is a fatal occurrence!

- Harnesses with padding on the chest are much more comfortable for your dog than collars and strip harnesses. Look for a harness that fits your dog very well, and has a decent amount of padding on the chest – it’s where most of the pressure from your dog’s tugging will go.

- Harnesses offer a much greater deal of control over your dog, dogs on collars can slip away if the collar is not tight enough, and can also run circles around you if you are not assertive enough with your leash

For your dog’s sake, please ditch the collar, and get a harness for your tiny!

What Is Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis in dogs (HGE)?

My dog Lucky (Pug X Chihuahua) recently had an episode of HGE – if you aren’t familiar with what it is, the most important thing you need to know about it is this: It is fatal if left untreated for 12-24 hours. Symptoms are severe vomiting, and diarrhea.

Ever notice your dog throwing up? Having diarrhea? These are signs of illness, and it could be a plethora of things. Make sure you do not take it as something that will pass, and check the vomit and diarrhea for blood. If there is blood in the stool or vomit, take your dog to the vet right away – he could be bleeding internally. MY little Lucky was bleeding from his anus and constantly throwing up foam with traces of blood in it. We rushed him to the vet immediately where he was given antibiotics, and hooked up to IV. To my joy, he started to recover slowly. He had to spend two days at the vet, with constant IV treatment as well as painkillers and antibiotics.

Why Does My Dog Shiver So Much?

So you may have noticed your tiny shivering or shaking rapidly – even when it’s not cold! Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean necessarily mean that your dog is scared or sick. There are a few reasons why your dog shivers and shakes.

1. Excitedness
Your dog will shake a lot from being excited! Whether they are excited to see you or excited to go out, the excess energy will cause them to shake their tiny little bodies. Relieve the shivering by giving them what they want! If they are good of course. :)

2. Scared
Just like us humans, small dog breeds will shiver when they are frightened – the excess nervous energy will cause them to shake.

3. Cold
The most obvious reason for shaking – they are cold! This is especially apparent with short haired tiny breeds like the short-haired Chihuahua, or Miniature Pinschers, among a few others

Keep your dog from shivering and shaking by making them feel safe and warm!

How to: Fix My Spoiled Dog!

How can you tell if your dog is spoiled? Here are the most common signs that you have boosted your dog’s ego to the max!

- Your dog will not leave you alone at home
- Your dog gets jealous of other dogs that try to greet you
- Your dog barks at anything that comes near him/her
- Your dog bites

If your dog has a combination of any of these symptoms, it just means your dog’s head is a little too big and it’s time for a reality check. YOU are the master! Here are some tips on how to be a strong leader.

1. You must make sure that your dog is always below you, do not ever pick your dog up, especially in public! This will make your dog feel too confident, which may sound like a good thing, but over-confidence can lead to a nippy and yappy dog.

2. If your dog wants to sit on your lap at home, it must be at your discretion, firmly tell your dog “NO” and continue on doing your business. Do not give your dog attention when he/she wants something! They must work for it, always praise your dog for doing something good, not just for looking cute!

3. When other humans or dogs try to greet you, look at your dog’s eyes – are they glaring at someone? DO not allow your dog to glare at another dog or another person. Stop the behavior before it escalates (barking or biting)!

4. Praise your dog after being calm around other dogs and people – they will eventually pick up on the fact that they are getting what they want from what they just did. Make sure you show love to your doggie when they are good!

Praise your dog for being independent at home. If they have spent a good amount of time alone – you may praise your dog, but but you have to let them know when play time is over. It is important to have a calm, balanced dog as to prevent any mishaps with other dogs in the future!

Are Chihuahuas Yappy?

If you are planning to buy your first Chihuahua, but are wondering about their attitude – you have come to the right blog!

I have lived with 4 different Chihuahua over the past year, and I can tell you that they were NOT yappy. Let’s get down to the meaning of yappy real quick – a yappy dog is one that is loud and barks often. Chihuahuas are the smallest breed of dog and so they are going to bark as a defense mechanism if their self esteem is too high.

So, how does a Chihuahua owner prevent this?

DO NOT PICK UP YOUR DOG AROUND OTHER DOGS AND HUMANS! Please try not to spoil your tiny little doggie no matter how cute they are. You can spoil them in positive, non habit inducing ways. Your dog needs to socialize and become comfortable with everyone, and everything. It is very easy for small dogs to become naturally scared of everything if they are picked up around “dangers”. They will rely on you to defend them from these dangers, and if you don’t pick them up or “protect” them, they will bark! So do your Tiny a favour, and leave them on the ground! They will have to learn how to be comfortable with things bigger than them – which is everything!
