Have you ever wondered what the difference between dry food and wet food is? When I first became a dog owner, I actually didn’t know there was any. Let’s go over the pros and cons of both:
Wet Food
Pros
- Wet food is more moist, and can often contain more protein than dry dog food. Dogs have different results with varying levels of protein. Your vet will be able to help you figure out a balanced diet for your pup
- Less processed compared to dry food
- Less preservatives
- Easier to chew
- Unopened food has a longer shelf life than dry food
- Often more appetizing to your dog
Cons
- More expensive
- Your dog might become picky with his/her food and may have difficulty switching back to dry food in the future
- Opened wet food will go bad quickly
Dry Food
Pros
- More affordable than wet food
- You can be flexible with how much you feed your dog, as the dry food does not spoil as quickly opened compared to wet food when opened
- It is said that it cleans your dog’s teeth (unconfirmed)
- Exercises your dog’s jaw muscles
Cons
- Has more preservatives which keeps it from spoiling
- Unopened dog food has a shorter shelf life compared to wet food
- Not as nutritious as wet food due to it being baked and stored
If you have the cash, I would recommend mixing dry with wet. Research has shown that mixing the two can be quite beneficial to your dog. My personal preference however is dry dog food. It is a lot cheaper which is nice for me since I have three dogs of my own. The thing I like most about dry dog food is how much more convenient it is – Just scoop it up and pour it into a bowl. Also, since I can buy so much more at a time compared to wet food, it saves me a lot of trips to the local pet store.
